SXSW Film Poster Award

This year I was lucky enough to participate in the 2010 SXSW/AIGA Austin Film  poster awards. This was the second year of this contest. Now apart of the SXSW Film Design Awards, which has awards for both “Excellence in Title Design” and “Excellence in Poster Design.”

While I didn’t win, I feel so inspired by all the amazing design that was part of the show. It is truly amazing to see the quality of work being created for the independent film scene.

Poster Showcase

This months Poster showcase is for a film I was lucky enough to be involved with.  THE ART OF THE STEAL is the latest documentary by Don Argott &  9.14 Pictures (Rock School, Two Days in April) that tells the story of Dr. Albert C. Barnes and struggle over his mult-billion dollar art collection housed at the Barnes Foundation in Philly.   Back when I was on-staff at 9.14, I helped out on the production side of this project, and I’m so pleased at the way it turned out, as well as all the buzz it’s been getting over the last few months.  I had a chance to check it out at last years NYFF and it blew me away.  It’s being release in theaters on February 26th, so if you get the chance, go check it out.  You can look up where it’s playing near you over at the Sundance Selects website.

Now, onto the poster.  The one-sheet was designed by Neil Kellerhouse and Kellerhouse, Inc. (who’s probably best known for designing Criterion Collection art) and uses newspaper clippings to create a terrific film noir/caper style figure.  Design has a very old-fashion, art deco quality to it, reminding me of the great master, Saul Bass. A great poster, for flick.  (I may be a little biased)

From Paris with Love

Not to be confused with the 1963 Bond film, todays poster is not a sequel or re-imagining of TO RUSSIA WITH LOVE, it’s from the new John Travolta action flick, FROM PARIS WITH LOVE.  Designed by the team over at Ignition Print, the teaser poster is the one I’m the most taken with.  The studio has since released a few (Sub-par) alternate designs, but they’re your typical looking one sheets.

This version keeps it simple and combines two elements to create a striking image.  Surely intentional, it reminds me of some of the classic Bond posters from the 60s and 70s.  The film centers on a young employee in the office of the US Ambassador hooks up with an American spy looking to stop a terrorist attack in the city.  Not the most original concept in the book, but at least they have a killer looking teaser poster. The film does look to have a few silver linings: First, it’s based on a story by Luc Besson.  Second, it’s directed by Pierre Morel (Taken) - so there may be hope for it yet.  FROM PARIS WITH LOVE is due in theaters February 5, 2010.

jaws Poster

Todays Movie Poster showcase is brought to you by Andrew Lindstrom and his design site, Well Medicated.  He’s pulled together 100 Illustrated Horror Film Posters, some of which are amazing illustrated posters and others that I just good fun.  There are just too many amazing posters to spotlight, but some of my favorites are JAWS, FRIGHT NIGHT, THE THING, HOUSE and ROAD GAMES.  He’s split the showcase into two-parts, with the 2nd post coming on October 31st. Enjoy. UPDATE: 2nd Part has been posted.
